FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate.
Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. No registration necessary.
Based on the feedback from Open Labs members that have been there the previous years it is a not to be missed event.
Hope to see you there.
How much does it cost, approximately (from those that have been there previously).
- flight: 160E;
- transport from - to airport: 15E
- food: 30€/day;
- sleep: 50€-60€ (hostel)
- inner city transportation: N/A
A safe estimation would be something around 400€ with limited expenses.
Hope this helps.
Thanks. It’s about the salary of a month in Albania. Without a strong motivation or without any sponsorship it seems a bit hard to make it.
Unfortunately it is not a cheap overall, although the entrance is free. This is one of the reasons we are organising OSCAL every year in order to bring some of the FOSDEM atmosphere at a local level.
In addition, it concerns me that events like these are almost always happening in the same countries/cities. I understand that it is easier logistics wise, but it creates a phenomena where the same people, that can afford and/or are closer to these cities, are visiting and getting exposed to events that will probably have impact to the same cities/countries. I call this: the centralisation of ideas, which is also similar to the gentrification of ideas.
Anyway, I would propose you to ask for a sponsorship in one of the projects you have contributed in the past and hopefully they will support you.
Can’t wait to welcome and meet you in Brussels !
If I can help with anything to help you with your trip to Brussels, just ask !
We already talked about the accommodation ; I mentioned my sister works for a hostel “organization”. The hostel owned by my sister organization in Brussels is “Brussels Jacques Brel Youth Hostel”. It has rooms of 2, 4, 6, and 8 beds (boys/girls separated) and has a restaurant and bar (serving Belgian beers … just saying).
If you need to check another one (or help you choose), feel free to ask !
Jonathan, thanks for your kindness and hospitality.
I would consider coming just to get to know you.
But I haven’t decided yet, there is plenty of time to make up my mind.
Hopefully I will arrive in Brussels on Friday evening (02/02/2018), and will leave on Monday morning (05/02/2018).
@jbelien can you help me with accomodation? Your sister’s hostel seems OK, and I’d prefere to stay close to other OL members, if anyone else is comming.
Yes, of course I can help
I have no idea where the others will stay but if you want to book in the hostel my sister proposed here is the link : http://www.lesaubergesdejeunesse.be/en_US/website/action/hotel?id=2
Thanks. Hope to see you in Brussels.
